OUR

STORY

You are about to read about one of the most-unique friendships that will leave you wondering, how we keep pulling it off time and time again. We are two friends from different states that travel the world together in search of adventure and peace. Vanessa Doleshal is an advertising Executive living in Las Vegas and Ken Faught is a business owner and former travel TV host from California. Vanessa is remarkably single, and Ken, 18 years older, is happily married to an incredible wife and has two amazing children.

It all started when a group of friends had dinner at Giada’s in Las Vegas. Vanessa told Ken that he inspired her and another friend to go to New Zealand. That evening, Vanessa told Ken that if he ever needed anyone to join him on his adventures, to let her know. A few months later Ken invited her to Kauai for an adventure at the Princeville Ranch, and she immediately accepted. The same happened with Cabo, St. Bart’s, Exuma, St. Maarten, and so on. Simple friendships are the best!

It was during the COVID-19 craziness that we found ourselves talking about life goals and where we saw future selves. We’ve always traveled well together and always seem to look out for each other more than ourselves. We split all of our expenses 50/50, and routinely invite friends to join us. We typically travel during non-peak times and constantly search for value. Our age difference causes most people to wonder what’s going on between us, and for everyone there is a different answer. Sometimes, it’s a simple truth – we’re just friends.

So in our professional lives we have a unique blend of storytelling and inside information in the travel business. Ken was the editor-in-chief of the world’s largest off-road motorcycle magazine, had two TV shows, has written seven books, and has contributed to over 75 magazines worldwide. Vanessa has worked in the tour and travel business full-time since 2013. All of this soul searching, archive of fun photos and incredible memories, combined with experience in travel and photography is what led us to create this news blog. The type of news that is exciting and makes you want more. Our ultimate goal is to motivate and excite people to travel and explore our beautiful world. We hope you enjoy!

I grew up in Orange County, California as a skateboard kid. Great family life, incredible parents, and an ultra-cool younger sister. When I was 14, I was introduced to dirt bikes, and that changed my life. Oh yeah, it started me on a career path that led to a lot of unexpected twists and turns.

I worked at a motorcycle dealership called Orange County Cycle while I raced at motocross tracks including Saddleback, Ascot, Indian Dunes, and all over the Western United States. It was during this time in High School that I discovered my love for photography and that I enjoyed creative writing.

When I was 17, I was hired full-time by CN Publishing as Associate Editor of Cycle News and the Editor of Personal Watercraft Illustrated (Think Jet Ski). After nearly six years working on my BA at Long Beach State University, I ultimately took various editorial positions at Dirt Rider magazine, including editor-in-chief Dirt Rider which is where I learned a lot about life. I married Amy in 1992 and had already started international traveling. The company I worked for also owned such titles as Motor Trend, Hot Rod, Photographic, and dozens more. They were one of the nation’s largest publishers, and I was fortunate enough to be selected by Petersen Publishing, Canon, and Kodak to help test and provide critical input on the first generations of their co-branded digital professional cameras. Looking back on that, I was so lucky to be in the right place at the right time, a lot!

I have always loved photography, and have owned three commercial photo studios, and have done work for major companies including Honda, Lexus, Hyundai, Fox, Medieval Times, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM Sportmotorcycle, Bell Helmets, Roland Sands Designs, Rockstar Energy, Kicker, FMF, Wild Rivers, and Saleen, to name a few. I have shot video for companies like ESPN and Speed Chanel, and was named Photographer of the Year by EMAP (European Mid Atlantic Publishing) out of 7000 people.

During my time at Dirt Rider magazine, I was also responsible for coordinating production for as well as co-hosting two TV shows: Motorcyclist on Speed Channel and Dirt Rider Adventures on OLN. I also helped launch two other magazines; MXracer & ATV Rider and authored seven books.

Dirt Rider also started my real travel addiction, and I am now a Million Mile Traveller with American Airlines. My longtime friend and co-worker Mark Kariya, and I went on assignment and did travel stories together in Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Peru, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Canada, Mainland Mexico, Baja and all over the United States. Yes, we got paid to travel.I loved it so much that in 2009 I got my pilot’s license and bought a Cessna 182 Turbo and have flown myself from California to Florida, New York, Washington State, and about 20 states in between.

SOME OF KEN'S FAVORITE MEMORIES

I have been fortunate to do a lot of things. I love adventure and have bungee jumped in New Zealand, piloted rental planes in Hawaii, SCUBA dived in Hawaii, gone on safari in Africa, competed in motorcycle hill climbs in France, driven 500hp rally cars in New Zealand, and that’s just the beginning. I was on CBS’ 60 Minutes II for a story they did on motorcycling, I co-founded a chain of indoor electric kart tracks called Pole Position Raceway (which opened 16 locations across the United States), and I have two amazing kids (Hannah and Wyatt). In 2004 and 2005, I was contracted to act as Team Makita Suzuki’s MX PR Coordinator for racing legend Ricky Carmichael and even earned three land speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, as a paid Factory Suzuki rider on Team FL Racing.

So why do I travel with Vanessa most of the time without my family? Well, that goes back to supporting my wife, as crazy as that sounds. Amy, a stay-at-home mom, only lets our kids travel when they are out of school, and I want to follow her lead. It’s her choice and she’s always invited on our trips. Amy and I have an incredible amount of trust, and that is something earned throughout our marriage. I have been paid to travel around the world for 35 years during my career, sometimes gone up to 30 weekends a year, and that in itself is not normal. My work has created a lot of stress over time, and travel is the best thing in my quest to find balance. We also do a lot as a family, and I have been very fortunate to have their incredible love and support. It’s also allowed Amy and I to live our best lives, even though we are not always together. Then when we are together, the bond is even stronger.

VANESSA

DOLESHAL

Hello fellow adventure seekers, I am Vanessa Doleshal, my friends call me Ness. A native of Southern California, I was fortunate to always be adventuring with my family for as long as I can remember. Most of my most precious childhood memories came from our family adventures: our timeshare ranch in the Sequoia National Forest, spending two months in Italy, water play trips to Lake Nacimiento & Lake Havasu, Ski Trips to Mammoth and Tahoe, to name a few. We were also a family of competitive BMX racers which took us all over the US. Of course when you’re a child, you never really appreciate what you have until you’re the one adulting, trying to figure out the meaning of life. Looking back, this foundation set the tone for what is now my “fuel for life”; that fuel being both family and travel, and for that, I am truly grateful.

In between youth and the present day, my life journey included many pivotal points along the way. The best one being a family move (parents and 2 brothers) to beautiful Lake Havasu City when I was in high school. From there I went on to attend Arizona State University and earned a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies. A good friend then convinced me to move to Sin City (AKA: Las Vegas) to pursue a career in hospitality & tourism. The first seven years of my journey began at Mandalay Bay Resort, a luxury resort in the MGM Resorts International portfolio, and eventually transitioned  into the online travel curation sector. After nearly 14 years in this city and industry, I can easily say my love for travel & tourism has only grown!

When I am not traveling or working, I have a myriad of hobbies including golf, shooting guns, wine tasting, snowboarding, boating, wakeboarding, crafting, home decor, working in the yard, volunteering, hiking, napping, dirt biking, sewing, watercolor painting, sign language, dance.  I also LOOOVE hanging with my mom. Not only is she the most selfless, loving, caring person but she is cool as $hit and basically my partner in crime. She may live a state away, but we always find a way to do cool stuff together.

As a single, independent gal in my 30’s, I am afforded freedoms that usually only come with, well…. being a single, independent gal in her 30’s - and I don't plan to waste it!

I love those quiet moments where I spend time sitting with my thoughts, really analyzing what brings joy to my soul at the deepest level, and every time I am brought back to family, good friends & travel. I always say, timing is everything, and Ken was introduced into my life at a time when I was decidedly saying YES to life. If a new opportunity to travel, learn, grow, meet new people, etc was in front of me… I wanted it!  This attitude has paid off in ways I never saw coming and I plan to continue the theme, including saying yes to this blog and documenting my journey with Ken, family & friends.

One of my favorite parables is: “You only live once.” I say, WRONG! You only die once, you LIVE every day! And I plan to make the most of it. Thank you for being on this journey with me! I hope this blog leaves you inspired, motivated, and fuels your wanderlust for years to come.
