Rolling Bag vs Backpack
Finding the best way to pack while traveling is one that everyone faces at the beginning of their journey, and we are no different. For years, I was a professional photojournalist for one of the world’s largest publishing companies and could not afford the time to check-in luggage. Hence, I carried a backpack loaded with camera equipment and a small suitcase that would fit in the overhead compartment.
Fast forward 20 years and I have developed a simple technique that lets me know exactly what type of luggage to carry based on my wants and needs. If I am staying in one place for a long time, I typically choose a travel-friendly suitcase Then I typically carry a backpack with my laptop and camera equipment so I have all my really valuable equipment with me at all times. Finding the best travel backpack for men or the best travel backpack for women isn’t always that easy, but we do have some suggestions below.
My Travel Bags
I have five different bags that I usually use for travel depending on the destination and time on the road. A rolling suitcase is my main bag, and I have Pelican case larger shoots that holds camera equipment, a carry-on and my choice of two backpacks.

This is the largest bag, and it’s great for trips where I need to bring a lot of clothing. I never put anything valuable in check luggage because I have had too many things stolen over the years.

I have been using Ogio bags since the company first started producing quality travel gear. This particular backpack has all sorts of cool features, and it’s incredibly spacious.
PHOTO – LOWEPRO
I carry a lot of camera gear on every adventure, and have tried over a dozen different backpacks, and this seems to offer the best balance of access, gear protection, and a variety of compartment sizes.
PHOTO – CARRY ON
I probably use carry-on bags for the majority of my travel. A good rolling suitcase is a wise investment. I prefer a hard case over a duffle-style bag, but that is just my personal preference.
PHOTO – PELICAN
I have used Pelican cases for over a decade and they are incredibly durable and the best travel cases for photographers of all skill levels.
Travel Gear Basics
These items are all part of my standard gear that goes with me on virtually every flight. Having the best travel gear is essential if you want to make the most out of your adventure.

Camping & Backpacking Gear
I grew up in the Boy Scouts and have always loved camping. Although most of my travels these days are to hotels, resorts and VRBOs, I still invest in quality camping equipment.

Travel Technology – Important Gadgets
When I grew up, we had a cassette recorder and an AM/FM radio for entertainment, and it was not really that exciting. Having the best electronics for travel to me is absolutely essential and helps with everything from planning the best vacation to simple entertainment. For me, I am somewhat partial to apple because I have been using their products since 2006 in my businesses and have invested over $200,000 in iPads, MacBook Pros, iPhones, and just about all their major products.
