A Quick & Easy Guide to Epic Adventures on This Hawaiian Island
Our 14 Favorite Things To Do That You Won't Want To Miss
TOP EPIC THINGS TO DO IN KAUAI
We love traveling to exciting destinations and have even joked about moving to the Hawaiian island of Kauai several times. We absolutely love the small, laid-back feel of this part of the state, and have been more than a dozen times. Kauai is known as the Garden Isle and it goes back and forth between Costa Rica as the wettest spot in the world. It only has a population of about 70,000, so its pace is very relaxing, and perfect for the ultimate vacation. The incredible beauty also makes it ideal for outdoor adventurers, travel and nature photographers, and there is plenty to enjoy. What follows are 24 things to do on Kauai that we think you will enjoy this travel blog!
Go On An Adventure
The Princeville Ranch is our absolute favorite company on the island and for good reason. They have an amazing eco tour zipline tour that includes healthy lunch at a private swimming spot. Princeville Ranch Adventures also offers a four-wheel UTV adventure on their private 2500-acre working cattle ranch, where customer’s drive two- and four-person side-by-side machines on guided tours. Princeville Ranch Adventures also offers hikes and horseback tours (both public and private) through the interior of the island. The company has been family owned and operated since 1978, and their property is some of the most-gorgeous we’ve ever seen.
The Princeville Ranch has a wide-variety of activities and is one of our favorite places to visit. We’ve been there over a dozen times.
Take A Sunset Cruise On A Sail Boat
We have gone out with Captain Andy’s three times, and it has never let us down. Their sunset cruises include a steak and lobster dinner, and an epic tour of the island. Captain Andy’s also offer snorkeling packages that are unbelievable when the water is calm.
One of the most-relaxing experiences ever! Captain Andy’s is the best sunset cruise in Kauai in our opinion and we’ve been several times - plus amazing Surf & Turf on the Pacific Ocean!
Enjoy a little bike ride around the local area. Kapaa Beach Shop has a well-maintained fleet of bicycles that offer a fun, relaxing way to keep your body in motion and have fun with friends and family. It’s also relatively inexpensive and they offer rentals by the hour, half-day and full-day.
Deep Sea Fishing Kauai
This is a private boat charter that makes for exciting fishing adventure and great photo ops. They fish for Bigeye Tuna, Albacore, Kawakawa, Yellowfin Tuna, Black marlin, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Skipjack, Spearfish, Swordfish, Pelagic Fish, Billfish, Ono and Opa. Their biggest catch in the Pacific Ocean was a Blue Marlin weighing just over 1800 pounds.
Hawaii Adventure Center
Offers adventures by land, air and sea, and offer a variety of incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They have helicopter tours, all-terrain vehicle tours, kayaking, SCUBA diving expeditions (and dive training), river cruises, sightseeing, surf lessons, standup paddle boarding activities, bicycle tours, fishing charters, zodiac boat tours and much, much more!
Kauai Back Country
One of the most-unique activities on the island is tubing. Thrill seekers from around the world are given a headlight at the launch site, and then casually float down the open canals and through a half dozen tubes. This is part of a flume system that was engineered and hand-dug by mostly Chinese in the 1870s.
Kauai Photo Tours
Calling all travel photographers and photo bloggers. If you want to see some of the most scenic places on the garden island, and are looking for a fun adventure, this photo tour is the fastest way to find gold. The company offers four photo tours to choose from and has lots of incredible experience. This is the best way to build your photo album quickly, blow up your Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter accounts, and learn more about this amazing craft. We recommend that you take a variety of camera lenses so you can make the most out of this incredible nature experience.
Kauai Reef Guides
Snorkel in the world-famous Hanalei Bay near the town of Princeville if the weather is good on your vacation. Kauai Reef Guides offers all of the equipment and guides who can tell you about the various species of fish found in the Pacific Ocean along with much of the island history. The water temperatures are pretty comfortable year-round, and the company even offers wetsuits for those who want to stay extra warm.
Take a Private Plane Ride with Wings Over Kauai
A little known secret is that most flight schools also offer private flying experiences in small planes, like Cessna 172s. I am a pilot and have taken Vanessa and friends out for some private sightseeing with this company. But even if you are not a pilot, this is a great option for all-around fun. Wings Over Kauai will arrange for a pilot to take you and two other passengers for an hour flight to check out Waimea Canyon, Napali Coast, Polihale State Park, Ke’e Beach, Tunnels Beach, Kalapaki Beach, Poipu Beach Park, Hanalei, Wailua River State Park, and much more. These flights offer more flexibility from helicopter tours because you can generally customize your route with the pilot in real time on the fly.
Ken is a private pilot and took our friend Elizabeth LaRocco on a private one-hour flight around the island of Kauai.
Kilohana Plantation Tour
This 105-acre plan slice of heaven overs a cool train ride so people can see all kinds of tropical beauty. This is also home to Koloa Rum, and they offer rum tasting every day of the week. I am a huge fan of Koloa Rum Punch and have been since discovering it in 2018. It doesn’t have a lot of alcohol and is nice and smooth.
Experience a Real Hawaiian Luau
Kauai offers a variety of luaus and this is something the entire family will enjoy. This is a blend of traditional Hawaiian entertainment and food that follows generations-old recipes. They are all pretty much the same, and we usually hit one every two to three years!
Hike The World-Famous Ke’e Trail on the Napali Coast
This is one of the absolute most incredible hikes that you can do, but you do need to plan ahead. As of 2019, you now need a state permit to go on this hike, but they are usually not that difficult. The hike takes you along the coast and the scenery is stunning. I took my friend Elizabeth LaRocco there, and got some amazing photos. We started our hike at the crack of dawn and hiked for about 3-4 hours.
Hiking in Hawaii is an incredible way to see the island and get some exercise.
About 2 miles into the trail, there is an incredible beach filled with stacked stones. Vanessa & her mom created one of their own.
Go Kayaking In Kauai
There are several places to Kayak in Kauai, but the most-relaxing can be found in Hanalei. It’s called Dock Dynasty (a play off the TV show Duck Dynasty no doubt) and they offer a variety of options including on- and two-person kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for a great value.
Our favorite place to Kayak on Kauai is Dock Dynasty in the small surf town of Hanalei. This is Jennifer Emig being tricked by Ken to do all the rowing. Ken always sits in back so no one can see that he’s not helping.
Play Mini Golf
Unquestionably the most-beautiful place to hit the little white ball is Kauai Miniature Golf and Botanical Garden. It’s kinda pricey, but it’s really relaxing and full of things you won’t see on the mainland.
Jennifer Emig is part of our travel group and is always making us laugh.
